Puppy Protocol

Hucklerberry Schnauzer Patch
Our puppies are available at 8 weeks to go home. Please make sure you are prepared for your puppy to go home at 8 weeks.

Below details the protocol that we follow while Huckleberry is preparing your puppy.  We have leveraged over a decade of experience to develop a regime that produces the best Huckleberry Schnauzer Patch puppy.

  • Tails & Dewclaws removed between 3 to 5 days old through our veterinarian and exams

  • 4 to 6 weeks your puppy will have another exam to check specifically for heart defects and overall health

  • Puppies have their toenails clipped every 2 weeks. Their toenails are also clipped if needed prior to going home. All puppies are bathed with Nootie shampoo and have a schnauzer puppy clip. They also have clean ears that are free of infection. They are bathed the day they go home with you.

  • At 6 weeks your puppy is vaccinated with:
    • Duramune® Max 5 which prevents Canine Distemper
    • Adenovirus Type 1 (Hepatitis)
    • Adenovirus Type 2 (Respiratory Disease)
    • Parainfluenza
    • Parvovirus and with Nobivac® Intra-Trac® KC (Progard KC) which prevents Canine Parainfluenza aka Kennel Cough
These are top of the line vaccines which have some of the highest titers. You will need to get a booster for Bordetella, 2 more Distemper 5-way boosters and rabies at 16 weeks. Do not allow your vet to give the Rabies vaccine with other vaccines. It has been known to cause allergic reactions in schnauzers and overload them. Do not allow your vet to vaccinate for Leptospirosis. Similar to humans your puppies will acquire immunities on there own to the environmental influences of this bacteria. Has been known to cause severe reactions in dogs. We personally do not recommend the lymes vaccines or the flu vaccines. If properly prevented and healthy a schnauzer has not need for these vaccines. Less is more!!! It is your responsibility to make sure your puppy does not get over vaccinated!

  • Fecal tests are done on every puppy prior to going home. Our vet checks for worms and parasites. Done between 7 to 8 weeks old

  • Your puppy will have a health check list from their exam signed by my veterinarian that goes home with you in the binder we provide you. Skeletal structure is examined to be free of deformities and luxating patellas, bite is checked, gums checked, heart checked, lymph nodes checked, abdominal palpated, ears checked, temperature taken, weight taken, eyes clear and not infected, hydrated, checked for hernias (if found I will let you know)these hernias are usually small umbilical hernias that do not effect the health of the puppy and skin free from bacterial or fungal infections. This final exam is done between 7 to 8 weeks old

  • The puppies are treated with K9 Advantix II before they go home with you. I do not have fleas in my home. So, your puppy will not have them either. This is a monthly-30-day treatment.

  • All puppies are Microchipped with prepaid enrollment for life. I register them in the new family’s name prior to them going home with you. You will get a confirmation through your email verifying the enrollment. The ISO is an international chip and superior to other types. All you do is set up your account FOR FREE @ www.akcreunite.org. This service has no annual fee.

  • I work on training your puppy to a puppy litter box. We use the litter below and will send some home with you and your new puppy. Put this out on the grass for your puppy to smell for the first few times you start taking them outside. They will smell it and relate it to eliminating and this will make transitioning to going outside to potty easier. This is litter specifically made for dogs. https://www.chewy.com/secondnature-dog-litter-25-lb-bag/dp/120531

  • A copy of the vet invoice will accompany your new puppy.

  • A binder is sent home with you divided into 6 sections, Health, Dog Food, Micro-chip, Vitamins, Schnauzer Information and Contract/ spay/neuter guidelines. The front of the binder has a picture of your puppy’s parents, your puppy, birthdate and my contact information.

  • We send you home with a puppy blanket (free of border or edging so your puppy does not chew it and accidently chokes), cookies, puppy food your puppy is currently on, toys and a collar that fits their small size.
